The premium hatchback segment is one of the hottest in Indian markets. Almost every manufacturer in the market has got a car in this segment. Earlier Honda made an attempt at this segment with the Honda Jazz but it failed to catch up well in the market. This happened because it was priced high and didn’t offer the option of a diesel engine. It was priced very close to the Honda City which obviously was a better value in comparison. Now they are going to launch a new Honda Jazz soon which will be priced competitively and will offer a diesel option as well.

It will face competition from cars like Suzuki Swift, Hyundai i20, Fiat Punto and Volkswagen Polo. The Polo has recently been updated and not only it gets a cosmetic treatment but has received a new diesel engine as well. The changes to the looks are minor and it looks more or less the same as the previous Polo. We aren’t complaining because the previous Polo looked quite impressive as well. It has got a simple yet elegant design and now with the new diesel engine, it is a better car than ever.

The Jazz will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines this time. The petrol engine will continue to be the same 1.2 l i-VTEC engine that we saw on this car last time. It generates slightly under 90 bhp which is pretty good for the car. The diesel engine will be the new 1.5 litre i-DTEC engine that generates a peak power of 100 bhp. This is a very impressive engine with good power output and efficiency. The amount of power it generates would be plenty to push this car to decent speeds quickly.

New Volkswagen Polo

The new Polo continues to have the same 1.2 litre petrol engine. It generates a peak power of 75 bhp which might not sound much but is good enough for the car. For the power hungry drivers, they will launch the updated GT TSI variant of this car soon. The 1.2 litre diesel engine on the old Polo has gone away for good. The three cylinder engine was noisy and not very quick off the line. Now it comes with a 1.5 litre diesel engine that generates a peak power of 90 bhp. It generates a healthy amount of torque and is a treat to drive around city.

The looks of new Jazz have been refreshed as well. It looks even better on the outside now. Inside it is a typical Honda and you will find plenty of space for the occupants. The Polo is good on the inside but the Jazz is slightly better. Opinions might vary about the looks as both the cars look quite good but we personally like the way Jazz looks. It also comes with better engine options for both petrol and diesel variants. Not only the engines are more powerful but they are also more efficient making the Jazz a better overall package.
