The latest Honda Civic to be launched in 2014 will have a high end voice based navigation assistant to assist drivers. This technology called SIRI will help drivers perform multiple functions while on the move like checking weather updates, sending messages and emails without losing focus on the road.

Buyers of the latest Honda Civic who also own an iPhone will be able to chat up with this voice activated software after syncing their phone. In future Honda’s cars will have SIRI as a key feature in all their display audio technology. In future all drivers of Honda Civic with Bluetooth phones will be able to activate the SIRI mechanism by holding a pre-programed talk button on its steering wheel thereby eliminating requirement to hold on to the phone. This technology has been developed by Apple Inc. to make voice based technology easy to use by integrating it with steering wheel based controls.

SIRI is now been integrated by several high end manufacturers like BMW, General Motors, Audi, Mercedes and Toyota to name a few into their vehicles’ computer systems since it can be maneuvered by a simple button.

SIRI can perform several tasks like providing street by street directions, providing weather updates, stock prices from preprogrammed websites, calendar reminders, sending and receiving emails and also simple text messages. The technology can be integrated with existing car’s display system which can also be used to play movies or listen to streaming music.

Honda’s Display Audio system is integrating SIRI’s Eyes Free feature for the first time on factory model of Honda Civic. Earlier buyers of Honda models were using this as an optional technology from dealers to enhance navigational feature of their cars and have a system which is user friendly and simple. The new factory installed Honda Display system will have interesting applications beyond SIRI which will involve a seven inch high definition touch screen with options to play music, make telephone calls, find information about the car’s features and also find directors to required destination.

Some critics of the system state that the multiple features provided by SIRI can be attention diverting and remove driver’s focus from the road. However this is far from the truth as this technology helps driver to activate it from touch of a small button on the steering wheel and carry on operating its options by voice activated commands.

SIRI is a welcome change for drivers who have to enter details manually over existing GPS systems on cars and struggle with complicated menus to carry out simple tasks. In current car models drivers are used to syncing their Bluetooth enabled phones with audio systems to make or receive calls by voice commands therefore using SIRI for navigation and other options should be a cakewalk.

Other features of SIRI allows Honda Civic driver to use iPhone for finding suitable restaurants in the vicinity, scan trivial information, send and receive messages while listening to music from phone or other CD. Since using these features would be distracting for drivers manufacturers are looking for a solution to standardize mobile device usage while driving.
